Further Information:
Description:

This project has a great need for volunteers to help assist our Local teachers in bettering Education in Zanzibar. This project is very rewarding, as you will be helping add HOPE and LOVE in many less privileged Children’s lives.The children's ages are from 2-15 years old. Our aim is to improve the education in Zanzibar as a whole.  As a volunteer you have the opportunity to assist the local teacher in the Classroom.  We have a great need for assistance with sports in the afternoons and teaching in the classrooms. Your help will be so much appreciated.

PROJECT LOCATION

The school is based in Mbweni area close to the beach (1km walk away from the beach). The school’s name is Willey Academy. The accommodation is walking distance to the School.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

All volunteers must be 18 years old (If you are younger than 18 years old then we will require a Permission letter from your Parents agreeing to your Travel).  No skills are necessary.  Just a love for Children and a love for serving.  We prefer our Volunteers to come with the mindset of being motivated and willing to Serve others.  Please be prepared to live in African conditions (in a neat House) and have a desire to work and help out where needed. All volunteers must have adequate travel insurance (hospital cover advised).

THE PROJECT

The School has around 300 students that have a great need for helpers. There is a great need for assistant teachers.  As an assistant teacher you will help (assist) the teacher that teaches around 40 children alone per classroom. Your help will be so much appreciated at the school. The children come from Poor back-grounds and many lack Parenting.  The Children are aged between 2 to 15 years of age.

The school runs from 8am to 1pm. In the afternoons you may assist with sports if you would like too.

The school requires helpers to help teach the children one on one mainly.  There is a great need for improving education: Arts and Crafts, Music, General creative activities, Maths and science and biology teachers.  One of our greatest desires is for the children to speak English & do better at their school work, so your help and assistance with this will be so much appreciated.

The school comprises of the following;

·         Kindergarden and Nursery school;

·         A primary school

·         Vocational Training institute

ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS

Volunteers are housed, at a local Neat house (situated 1km from the beach).  The Property mainly runs sufficiently (sometimes there is hot water), Other-wise the water is cold (which can be refreshing after a hard day’s work). Please be prepared for African Style living in an African atmosphere, It is however an amazing experience. The accommodation is comfortable and clean (we have a cleaner 2 times a week).  We do like to try and give our volunteers the very best we can.

Please budget on an additional food amount of:  $40 - $50 per week for food. (Our team will take you to the shops once a week to buy your food - transport is free of charge). There are also shops and restaurants close by with free wi-fi.

TRANSPORT ON ARRIVAL AND ORIENTATION

You will be collected from Zanzibar international airport safely on arrival and a friendly team leader will welcome you (we will also take you back to the airport on departure).  If you arrive on a Ferry from the Mainland of De es Salaam, then we will collect you at the Ferry Pick up Point.

Basic Orientation will be given to you within 24 hours of your arrival. The orientation will cover basic information about the area, safety, transport, activities, food and supplies.  We will also give you a tour of the village and show you our relevant projects.
