Malaria:

Malaria Tablets are Mandatory to take in Mozambique.
Please see the websites MD Travel Health  and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on Malaria in Mosambique.

Volunteers need to consult their family doctor for the appropriate prescriptions before departure from their home country.  We also recommend that you buy the Malaria treatment package Before departure from Mozambique. This is for in case you catch the malaria.  The treatment stops the Malaria Symtoms if you do get Malaria.  It only costs +- $3 if you buy it locally (so please ask a staff member to buy these for you before departure).

These Tablets will save you having to go to the doctor and hospital care if you do catch the Malaria when you are in your home country. You can take these tablets for 3 days (24 tablets total - 4 in the morning and 4 in the evening for 3 days).

You can also decide not to take malaria tablets when you are in the country. However then you will need to take treatment tablets with you before departure.  The malaria is treatable as long as you take the tablets at the right time 8 hours apart the 1st 4 and then the second 4 tablets following on for 2 days after.  We do however recommend that you take the Malaria tablets before departure and during your stay to prevent getting Malaria whilst you are in the Country.

- Mobile phone. A variety of mobile network carriers provide good coverage for mobile phones. It is normally more cost effective to locally purchase pay-as-you-go air-time and data bundles compared to roaming options.

If you wish to go onto the internet then you will need to bring your laptop and ask a staff member to take you to the internet connection shop to get your laptop connected to the internet.  Please note that this is Africa so everything tends to happen at African time.  You can buy an Internet dongle for your computer and buy internet airtime.  You will however need the internet shop to connect the internet Dongle to your laptop.

- Spending money for essentials and souvenirs, also money for internet and a local phone is needed (if you wish to have a phone when you are here) We do recommend this to Volunteers as its good to be able to communicate with friends at home.
